Redwood Trees

It's a long drive between Humboldt County and San Francisco—six hours or so, unless there's a rockfall or landslide—but the drive's pretty. We took the opportunity to stop along the way to visit California's famous redwood trees up close.

Sunny or foggy, dry or rainy, a redwood forest is a thing of deep beauty.

Occasionally a redwood exhibits albinism...it's quite striking, the white needles against the vivid green and red-brown of the forest.

Yes, those tree trunks really are as wide as our four-door SUV...and those aren't considered big redwoods! The big ones are almost 400 feet tall (over 115 meters) with diameters of 26 feet (8 meters). They can live to be over 2,000 years old.

The ghost trees are like the unicorns of tree unicorns--rare and magical.
